African Peanut Stew with Kale

African Peanut Stew

When I first came across the idea of peanut stew, I did not like the sounds of it.  Peanuts will get soggy when they’re stewed, and that texture might be weird.  They are great made into butter, however. The creamy butter from the peanuts is the star in this dish, not stewed peanuts.  Don’t be afraid! Continue reading

Football Food for Super Bowl Sunday

Football Food

I love watching football all season long.  Football Sundays are cherished for us when the fall rolls around.  It is special because there are so few games to the season, in comparison to other sports.  We huddle around the couch, spending time together enjoying copious amounts of football food! I love to experiment with all kinds of foods, finding the most fun and creative to eat for those special days!   Continue reading

Lentil and Bulgar Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes with Blugar and Lentils

Every time I am in the store and see all the pre-made packages of food, I say to myself, I can make that!  No package necessary.  This was my inspiration to make sloppy joes.  I did not grow up eating sloppy joes, probably because I was too picky of an eater as a kid!  Someone should have told me how fun they are to eat! Toasted Ravioli with Homemade Dipping Sauce

Toasted Ravioli with homemade dipping sauce by Alison's AllspiceI love foods you can dip.  Ok, maybe I just love finger foods and eating with my hands.  I feel like a kid again.  Or maybe it’s the dip.  Dips add another dimension of flavor and texture to the food.  I love dips!  Whatever your reason to dig in with your hands, this toasted ravoli with homemade dipping sauce recipe has it all.  Crunchy coating and savory sauce.  Dig in!

Avocado Tostadas

Tacos are considered a kings food in my house.  Tostadas are flat tacos, right?  Well, not really.  Tostada means “toasted.”  It’s kind-of hard to toast a taco because all the ingredients are wrapped up inside it’s crunchy shell (or soft shell depending on your preference).  Tostadas and tacos have very similar (if not the same) ingredients, therefore, we are making room for toasty tostadas at the king’s table!  Especially these avocado tostadas!

Green Tomato Mince Pie

This was my favorite pie recipe as a kid.  Grandma told us kids that it was apple and raisin pie, because otherwise we (I) might not have eaten it!  Green tomato mince pie is different from most pie recipes because it has a tart tanginess that comes from the unripened tomatoes.  This pie is heavily spiced with cinnamon and allspice and is perfect for the holidays!Slice of Pie

Three Bean Chili

Last week I was all about savoring summer.  I even picked up a few zucchinis at the farmers market this weekend because I don’t want to let go!  I finally have realized however, that I must embrace fall because those bone chilling days of winter will come shortly after.  Nothing says fall to me like chili.  This chili recipe is great for this time of year when you can still get locally grown peppers.

Trout Etoufee

This recipe has been an Alison classic for a long time.  I have shared it with many friends and family and it is time that it comes to the blog.  I love Cajun food.  It is a passion of mine to create recipes for Cajun dishes.  Etoufee is a classic Cajun dish and this recipe is made with trout!

Fresh 6 Layer Bean Dip

Football season starts tomorrow!!  I don’t know what I love more, watching the ball game, or planning the food and drink!  We love to watch the games, crowded around the TV with a plate full of finger foods and snacks.  This recipe for bean dip is so simple to throw together before the game and is always a hit!

Vegan Chilaquiles

I am so excited to share this recipe.  Chilaquiles (Chee-la-key-les) is a traditional Mexican dish that is made to use up stale tortillas or tortilla chips.  I dislike food waste, therefore I love recipes like this one.  Recipes that lend ideas to use up ingredients that you have leftover in your fridge.  This recipe is so quick, I almost didn’t get any photos while I was cooking.  A great recipe for a busy weeknight!
