Five Spice Shrimp Tacos with Rhubarb Ginger Sauce

Five Spice Shrimp Tacos with Rhubarb Ginger Sauce by Alison's AllspiceHave you guys tried chinese 5-spice powder yet?  It’s been a popular up-and-coming spice for a while now, and I’m just now getting on board.  Chinese five-spice is a blend of Szechwan pepper, star anise, cinnamon, cloves, and fennel.  It has a wonderfully warming characteristic that pairs perfectly with other Asian flavors, such as ginger, and is not spicy.  My five spice shrimp tacos with rhubarb ginger sauce are an amazing twist between Asian and Mexican cuisines! Slow Cooker Italian Lentil Stuffed Zucchini Boats

Slow Cooker Italian Lentil Stuffed Zucchini Boats by Alison's AllspiceThis month’s theme for the recipe redux was to avoid heating up the kitchen by using a cool cooking appliance (ie not the oven).  I love my big slow cooker for soups, but I don’t eat many soups during summer.  The zucchini in my garden have been plentiful for a few weeks now, at one point I had a pile of 14 on my kitchen counter!  Therefore, zucchini boats were in order.  To fit in with the redux theme, I made slow cooker Italian lentil stuffed zucchini boats! Grilled Clam Stuffed Mushrooms with Tomato Relish

Grilled Clam Stuffed Mushrooms with Tomato Relish by Alison's AllspiceI have a gigantic collection of cooking magazines that I have collected over the years.  I’m pretty serious about my collection as well.  My magazines are filed away according to the month published.  When ever I need some recipe inspiration, or want to do some light reading I go find this months file.  I tab all my favorite ideas so they are easy to find, but sometimes I will reread the magazine and see how my tastes have changed since I first tabbed it.  Recently I did this and came across a stuffed mushroom recipe with a red pepper relish.  I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t tabbed that recipe! I instantly wrote up my own variation and dubbed it worthy of a grill out night.  And thus, grilled clam stuffed mushrooms with tomato relish was born.  Continue reading

Tzatziki Cucumber Dill Crackers

Tzatziki Cucumber Dill Crackers by Alison's AllspiceDisclosure: I received free samples of Breton Crackers mentioned in this post. By posting this recipe I am entering a recipe contest sponsored by Breton Crackers and am eligible to win prizes associated with the contest. I was not compensated for my time.

This week I have been having a lot of fun playing around with cracker toppings.  Bite size food has to be able to impress in that single bite, so you know the flavors have to be good.  Therefore, sampling all those flavors, such as my Banh Mi Crackers, has been a lot of fun, and delicious.  The Breton Crackers that I received samples of have been great.  I received the original flavor, which is quite tasty, and really  enjoy their light and crisp texture.  The size of the cracker is large enough to top with lots of veggies and smear with sauces, such as my Tzatziki Cucumber Dill Crackers. Fried Chickpea Gyro Bowls with Tzatziki Sauce

Fried Chickpea Gyro Bowls with Tzatziki Sauce By Alison's AllspiceThe first time I had heard about fried chickpeas, I was reading over at Naturally Ella (an amazing vegetarian blog).  I knew immediately that I would have to try the technique.  A quick pan fry has the ability to add texture and depth of flavor that you wouldn’t normally find in a chickpea.  These fried chickpea gyro bowls with tzatziki sauce are exploding with flavor, and come together quickly for an easy weeknight meal! One Pot Spanish Wheat Berries with Chickpeas and Olives

Wheat berries are my favorite grain to cook with.  They are inexpensive, and the texture is outstanding!  I feel like they get overlooked so often because gluten free grains are popular right now.  Also, fancier wheat grains are often used by recipe developers, so they get all the hype.  I have tried both farro and kamut (ancient wheat grain varieties), and I don’t think they are worth the extra money when compared to standard wheat berries.  This one pot Spanish wheat berries with chickpeas and olives is a take on arroz con pollo, made vegetarian of course! Spiced Pumpkin Lentil Soup

spiced pumpkin lentil soupToday we are going to talk about soup.  I despised soup as a young adult.  Afterall, it came out of a can.  When I started to make my own homemade soups, I realized that canned soup did not compare at all in flavor and texture.  Homemade soup is a really easy meal to make as well.  I enjoy eating soups over fall and winter the most because they help to warm you up.  This spiced pumpkin lentil soup is especially warming and filling.
