One of my favorite things to do is enjoy an evening around the campfire! Campfires usually lead to drinks and food, and my favorite campfire food is this weeks recipe, homemade smokey white cheddar popcorn!
This popcorn gets it’s smokey flavor from smoked paprika. The fresher the smoked paprika, the stronger the flavor will be. I buy small amounts from the bulk spices so that it never looses its strong flavor!
When I make this recipe around the campfire, I use this chestnut roaster/fireplace popcorn popper It is heavy duty and made of steel so it will last, and be safe for high heat cooking!
When I make this popcorn at home, I simply use a paper bag in the microwave. The bag keeps the kernels from ending up everywhere, and there is no oil necessary for cooking!
Tips and tricks for the Homemade Smokey White Cheddar Popcorn recipe:
- When purchasing white cheddar cheese powder, make sure the brand you buy does not have partially hydrogenized oils! This is the brand I like.
- I don’t like my popcorn to be overly salty. If you prefer more salt, try using salted butter.
- Be sure to use fresh smoked paprika to have the strongest smokey flavor.
- The garlic granules adds depth. You could also try onion powder or dry mustard.
- ¼ cup popcorn kernels – 5 cups popped
- 2 TBS unsalted butter, melted
- 1 ½ TBS white cheddar cheese powder
- ¼ tsp smoked paprika
- ⅛ tsp garlic granules
- ⅛ tsp salt
- Pop kernels in a brown paper bag in the microwave until there is only 3 seconds between pops, approximately 2-4 minutes. It took 3 minutes in my microwave.
- Melt butter and poor over the popcorn.
- Mix together remaining ingredients and toss with the buttered popcorn.
This recipe was adapted from the kitchn. I shared this post at Fiesta Friday and the Weekend Potluck!
Where do you find the white cheddar cheese powder?
King Arthur brand is very good. It’s out of stock on Amazon, but here is a direct link to King Arthur. Sometimes I can get the Frontier Co-op brand from my local coop as well.
