A few weeks ago I shared a recipe for my ultimate crispy tofu that is so cripsy and crunchy that you will never make tofu another way again. This week, I transformed the recipe to make these crispy buffalo tofu bites!
When I first transitioned to a meatless lifestyle, I missed buffalo wings the most. While these buffalo tofu bites are not “wings” they do satify that desired for something crispy and spicy!

Tips and Tricks for making these Crispy Buffalo Tofu Bites:
- Freeze the tofu in advance. It needs to be frozen solid. I usually just put the entire package right into the freezer when I am putting away groceries.
- Press the tofu. No need to dirty dish clothes or waste paper towels. After boiling, place the block between two plates and top with something like a 2 lb bag of dried beans. (I prefer not to use canned goods that might fall over!)
- Thin slice the tofu for the cripsiest texture. The thinner the slices are, the crispier and crunchier they will get! If you like them to be a little soft in the middle, leave the slices larger.
- Pan fry in oil. Using a heavy bottomed skillet will produce the best results. Use a high heat oil such as canola or avocado oil and flip after 5 minutes!
Way to use these Crispy Buffalo Tofu Bites:
- Serve them “wings” style with sauces to dip in, like ranch or blue cheese.
- Make a buffalo tofu salad by placing the bites over a bed of lettuce. Serve with thin sliced red onions, croutons, and ranch dressing.
- Try them in a buffalo tofu wrap similar to my buffalo tempeh wraps, but without the need to bread the tempeh.
- Stack them up between bread slices with lettuce and a smear of mayo or a few slices of avocado to make a buffalo tofu sandwich.
- If you practice taco tuesday, then you might love these bites in a buffalo tofu taco! Make them with corn tortillas, lettuce and pico de gallo!
- Last but not least, try a buffalo tofu bowl! Start with a bed of grains, such as rice or quinoa. Top with roasted veggies, like broccoli or cauliflower. Add buffalo tofu and a scoop of creamy hummus!

Author: Alison's Allspice
Recipe type: Main
Cuisine: American
Serves: 3-4 servings
Ingredients
- 16 oz block extra firm tofu (water packed, not silken), frozen for at least 3 hours
- 3-4 cups vegetable broth
- ⅓ cup canola or avocado oil
- ⅓ cup hot sauce (buffalo style prefered!)
Instructions
- Place the frozen tofu into a 2 quart sauce pan. Add just enough broth to cover the tofu (I only needed 3 cups) and bring to a boil. Simmer for 15 minutes.
- Drain the broth and press the tofu. I place the tofu between two plates adding weight to the top. About 15 minutes is all it needs.
- Slice the tofu block in half, then slice into ¼ inch thick pieces.
- Heat half the oil in a heavy bottomed skilled, like a cast iron. Once shimmering, add half the tofu slices. Cook for 5 minutes, or until golden. Flip and cook for another 5 minutes. Repeat with remaining tofu and oil.
- Toss with buffalo sauce and serve!
