Chickpea Harissa Bread Soup

Chickpea Harissa Bread Soup by Alison's AllspiceThis chickpea harissa bread soup is a variation of lablabi, a Tunisian chickpea stew.  The traditional stew has a thin broth with chickpeas served over toasted bread. This version is also served over toasted bread, but the broth is thick and creamy.

The Italians also have a version of bread soup, usually made with stale bread and tomatoes.  Italian bread soup has you add the bread to the pot at the end of cooking.  I prefer this version of bread soup where the bread is toasted and added to the bowls. It maintains more texture, kind-of like a crouton. Continue reading

Easy Whole Wheat Flatbread

Easy Whole Wheat Flatbread by Alison's AllspiceThis easy whole wheat flatbread recipe really takes me back to my roots as a recipe developer.  In my early days as a blogger, I was developing a lot of recipes to use whole wheat flour as a part of my journey towards eating whole foods.

My whole foods journey is an ongoing process.  I’m easier on myself now than I once was.  However, I still find that I feel better when I make baked goods with whole wheat vs processed flour. Continue reading

Smoked Tofu Schnitzel

Smoked Tofu Schnitzel by Alison's AllspiceI love my homemade smoked tofu recipe, and I love even more finding delicious ways to use it.  This smoked tofu schnitzel is crunchy, chewy, and flavorful.

When I considered trying a tofu schnitzel recipe, I was worried it would be bland, just like tofu.  You can make tofu delicious by letting it absorb other flavors, but simply breading and frying it didn’t seem like that would do the trick alone.

I decided to go with my smoked tofu instead because it is already prepped with loads of flavor.  All you have to do is slice it, bread it, and fry it!  Oh, and perhaps choose a sauce. Continue reading

Healthy Vegan Chickpea Wraps

Healthy Vegan Chickpea Wraps by Alison's AllspiceFall is always very busy for me because it’s the beginning of a new school year.  I rely on easy recipes like these healthy vegan chickpea wraps to help me eat well when I don’t have much time to cook.

For these wraps, I prefer to make a chunky paste out of my chickpeas because whole chickpeas will roll right out of a wrap and are more likely to make a messy eating experience. Continue reading

Barbecue Tofu Sandwiches

Barbecue Tofu Sandwiches by Alison's AllspiceThe first time I tried these barbecue tofu sandwiches, I was surprised at how good they were!  I mean, this recipe is so simple, I didn’t expect it to wow me.  I knew it had to become a blog recipe right away.

My first tip for success with this recipe is to use a quality barbecue sauce.  Tofu is a blank slate, and the barbecue sauce is the major player adding flavor, so it has to be good.  I recommend making homemade, such as my Peach Bourbon BBQ Sauce or my Homemade Rhubarb BBQ Sauce.  I used the later in the photos here. Watermelon Lime Refresher

Watermelon Lime Refresher by Alison's AllspiceIt has been a hot summer, and I have been enjoying a variety of different cool and refreshing drinks like this watermelon lime refresher!

This drink recipe is so simple, it has only three ingredients.  I find this refresher perfectly balanced between the tart lime juice and the sweet watermelon. My watermelon was a very sweet one, so I felt no need to add any sugar at all. Continue reading

Chocolate Peanut Butter Date Caramel Bars

Chocolate Peanut Butter Date Caramel Bars by Alison's AllspiceThese chocolate peanut butter date caramel bars are a healty no-bake snack or dessert recipe.  Date caramel is made by blending dates and nut butter (peanut butter in my recipe!) until smooth, and it makes the center layer of these bars!

I was recently asked by a reader to post more dessert recipes.  If you read here, then you know that I don’t post many.  It’s not that I don’t post them, I don’t make sweets often.

One main reason is that I’m the only one in the house with a sweet tooth, so all desserts end up being consumed by me.  Giant layer cakes and whole pans of brownies just make way too much for one person. Continue reading

Asian Noodle Stir Fry Salad

Asian Noodle Stir Fry Salad by Alison's AllspiceDuring summer, I don’t like to use the oven or do too much serious cooking that will heat up the house.  I eat a ton of salads during summer, but sometimes you just want something a little more substantial, but still light and refreshing.  This Asian noodle stir fry salad hits all those points. Continue reading

Baked Arugula Falafel

Baked Arugula Falafel by Alison's AllspiceI love falafel, and homemade falafel is easier to make than you might think.  This baked arugula falafel recipe is a great way to incorporate more greens into your diet, and it still tastes like falafel that you crave.

When I first tried this recipe, I really thought the arugula would make the falafel taste different from my favorite all-cilantro version of falafel.  The difference, however, was very subtle. Continue reading

Pan Seared Potato Gnocchi with Asparagus and Mushrooms

Pan Seared Potato Gnocchi with Asparagus and Mushrooms by Alison's AllspiceHave you ever tried pan seared potato gnocchi?  The soft, pillowy gnocchi get chewy and caramalized on the outside and stay tender on the inside.  I made mine with asparagus and mushrooms served with a miso sauce!

When I first tried this recipe, I tried making my own potato gnocchi.  The end result was delicious, but the process was a sticky gooey mess.  Needless to say, that recipe needs a touch more work before it comes to the blog. Continue reading
