Mushroom and Pickled Onion Sandwiches by Alison's AllspiceWhenever I enjoy a sandwich, I want it to be over-the-top.  So full of flavor and texture that you’ll beleive its the best food in the world.  These mushroom and pickled onion sandwiches are rather simple, yet loaded with both texture and flavor.

Lets start by discussing the texture.  The silky cheese coats the mushroom pieces helping to hold them together, pickled onions add brightness, and the lettuce and toasted bread add crunch. Continue reading

Red Lentil Dal Spinach Bowls

Red Lentil Dal Spinach Bowls by Alison's AllspiceRed lentil dal is a popular Indian dish where red lentils are stewed in aromatics and spices until super flavorful.  It is fast, inexpensive and easy so it’s no wonder why it is popular.  Today, I want to share my twist on this class, red lentil dal spinach bowls!

To get started, lets discuss red lentils.  Red lentils are the fastest cooking lentil, have a sweeter and milder flavor, and tend to get kind-of mushy when cooked.  Kinda. Continue reading

Sweet Potato Black Bean Tostadas

Sweet Potato Black Bean Tostadas by Alison's AllspiceI had 2 sweet potato plants in my garden this summer and I finally harvested them yesterday. It’s sad to see the garden finally be done for the season, but it is exciting to have a great sweet potato harvest this year to use in my sweet potato black bean tostadas!

I absolutely adore sweet potatoes in spicy dishes.  The sweet and the heat are made for each other!  In this dish I use red pepper flake to add plenty of kick. Continue reading

Homemade Red Wine Vinaigrette

Homemade Red Wine Vinaigrette by Alison's AllspiceThis homemade red wine vinaigrette is my go-to dressing for salads.  It only requires 5 ingredients, so it is really easy to keep everything you  need on hand.

I prefer my vinaigrettes to be very strong, and I wrote the recipe how I make it.  Traditionally, more olive oil is used which will reduce the vinegar-y-ness of the dressing.   Make it how you like it. Continue reading

Cherry Tomato Stewed Butter Beans over Toast

Cherry Tomato Stewed Butter Beans over Toast by Alison's AllspiceAt the end of the gardening season, I am always bringing in loads of cherry tomatoes.  These little gems are such a treat because they are the sweetest tomato around.  I love turning them into rustic sauces, like I do in this cherry tomato stewed butter beans over toast recipe.

Butter beans are also known as lima beans.  They’re renaming is apt because these beans really do have a moist and buttery center.  You could also make this recipe with white beans, but don’t be intimidated by the large butter bean.  In my opinion, they are better! Continue reading

Ginger Peach Habanero Shrimp Kabobs

Ginger Peach Habanero Shrimp Kabobs by Alison's AllspiceFriends, today I am very excited to share a new product with you that I have been in love with.  Fired Up Jellies and Jams is a popular local brand that makes amazing jellies/jams with habanero peppers.  I used their peach version to make these ginger peach habanero shrimp kabobs.

The Cinnful Peach Habanero Jam is made with a vietnamese cinnamon that is quite different from the kind you might put into your favorite baked goods.  Peaches and ginger are a match made in heaven, and the spicy cinnamon compliments them both. Continue reading

Greek Chickpea Salad by Alison's AllspiceFriends, it has been a very busy summer for me, and I hope you all have a summer full of great recipes so far. This recipe, Greek chickpea salad, is one that I have been eating a lot this summer.

This salad is very easy to make.  It requires a little bit of time to chop all the vegetables, but it is totally worth it.  The flavor of all the vegetables go together perfectly, and the dressing is the icing on the cake! Continue reading

Roasted Cauliflower and Spinach Pasta by Alison's AllspiceFriends, it has been a busy summer, but I have not forgotten about you and your recipe needs!  This roasted cauliflower and spinach pasta recipe is a simple one that I whipped up out of leftover ingredients in the fridge but I loved it so much that I though you all needed to have it here.

I wrote this recipe as a single serving because that is how I made it.  It could easily be doubled or quadrupled to serve your whole family or to take to a cookout. Continue reading

Grilled Shrimp with Creamy Cocktail Sauce (Marie Rose Sauce) by Alison's AllspiceDinner at my house tonight is going to be grilled shrimp with creamy cocktail sauce!  The creamy cocktail sauce is a condiment from the UK also known as Marie Rose sauce.

I discovered this sauce/dip once when I was serving cold cocktail shrimp and totally overlooked the idea something to dip them in.  I went searching the internet for a simple dip that I could whip up from pantry ingredients and I have been making this sauce ever since! Continue reading
