I first decided to put asparagus on a pizza simply because I already had some in the fridge. It was going to be a sun-dried tomato, artichoke, and asparagus pizza. As life goes, that didn’t happen. I ran out of sauce, so I ended up using my sun-dried tomatoes in my Asparagus Carbonara recipe. I hit the drawing board again and decided to try the pizza with a simple white sauce. This Asparagus Artichoke White Pizza is even better than I had imagined, and a great way to wrap up this years Asparagus Mini-Series!
For full disclosure, my husband was not a fan, but I loved this recipe! The white sauce was so simple to make, and tasted great. It would do on any pizza. Where our taste buds strayed apart was the asparagus. I LOVE asparagus, hence the mini-series. He didn’t think the asparagus was a great pizza topping, that just means more for me, right? Yup, that’s what I thought {wink}.
Variations to the Asparagus Artichoke White Pizza recipe:
- I loved the white sauce on this pizza. However, a traditional red sauce would be great as well.
- Try using my Quick Homemade Whole Wheat Pizza Dough instead of buying pre-made.
- Load up the veggies! Mushrooms and spinach would be great additions to this pizza.
- Use a pizza cheese blend instead of all the individual cheeses if you prefer.
- 1 TBS olive oil
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 TBS all purpose flour
- ½ cup milk of choice (I used soy milk)
- 2-3 twists of a sea salt grinder and cracked black pepper grinder
- 1 tsp dry basil (1 TBS fresh)
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan
- 1-lb whole wheat pizza dough
- 1 cup asparagus, trimmed and cut to 1 inch pieces
- 1 cup artichoke hearts (frozen, thawed)
- ¾ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup shredded provolone cheese
- ¼ cup shredded or shaved Parmesan
- Preheat oven with a pizza stone to 425 F.
- In a small sauce pan, cook garlic in olive oil until starting to brown, about 1 minute. Whisk in flour. Cook stirring continuously for 2-3 minutes. Don't let the flour start to brown or your sauce will not be white.
- Pour in milk while whisking to prevent clumps. Stir continuously until it starts to boil. Remove from heat and stir in remaining ingredients. It will thicken more as it cools.
- Spread dough out into a 12 inch circle.
- Carefully remove pizza stone from oven. Place dough onto stone. Quickly, spread sauce over crust. Top with cheeses and veggies.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12 minutes.
